MWSC Travel FAQs

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER PLAYING TRAVEL SOCCER?

Players who have played soccer previously and have demonstrated superior abilities and are looking for a more competitive environment than recreational soccer, and who are eager to learn advanced soccer skill should consider playing travel soccer. This is a competitive club, and a high level of commitment is required from both the player and parents.

WHAT WILL BE THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR A TRAVEL TEAM?

There are two 10 game seasons that make up a travel year. Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 the commitment is for THE ENTIRE YEAR, players cannot transfers to another travel program until the commitment is fulfilled (without penalties and suspensions). Training schedules are dependent on coaches minimum training schedules is usually twice a week not including games. It is anticipated that one of these practices will be after school during the week and/or Saturdays. Typically in the winter, there is training at least once a week indoors and participation in indoor tournaments. Training continues throughout the year. Many training sessions will be directed by a professional trainer to teach the player the foot and tactical skills to master the game. Playing time is determined by skill level, participation in training and practices, all players are expected to attend all training sessions, games and tournaments.

WHERE WILL WE BE TRAVELING?

For the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 MWSC play in the Northern Counties Soccer Association (www.NCSANJ.com ) Youth Soccer League.  We will be primarily playing teams from Rockland and Bergen Counties.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Each year a family should expect to pay about $350 per player per year for U8 – U10 and $400 per player from U11 – up above the initial MWSC registration fee, this covers league registration expenses, professional training, referee fees, tournaments and training equipment. The travel portion of the fee will be collected in 2 payments. It is also expect to have the player/parent fully participate in club fundraising activities when necessary.  The biggest variable in cost is the amount of professional training time the team uses and the number of tournaments the team enters.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THE PARENTS?

Parents are expected to provide the necessary transportation needed by the players to attend all training sessions and games. In addition, each of the Monroe-Woodbury Soccer Clubs travel teams is independently managed.  Parents with accounting, fund raising, statistical, article writing, large vehicles, and yes, soccer skills are needed to effectively run the team.  All parents are expected to join the MWSC Booster Club and help plan and run their activities when necessary.

HOW MANY PLAYERS WILL BE SELECTED AND WHAT IS THE METHOD OF SELECTION?

Except for U17 - U19 teams, no full sided (age divisions U11 –U16) team shall have more than 18 players registered at any one time. Rosters for U1O teams (and younger) will be limited to 14 active players, U17 - U19 teams, the maximum number of active players can be 22.  The selections will be made at tryouts; coaches will be looking for a child who demonstrates a high level athletic ability, positive attitude, and (in the older age groups) have played soccer. After both tryouts are concluded the coaches will contact you with their decisions.

COACHES REQUIREMENTS

Coaches are required to successfully complete an “F” license coaching course before the start of the season.  This is a mandatory coaching certification; any fees will be reimbursed by MWSC.  Coaches are also required to fill out a coach’s disclosure form (background check).
